На мой взгляд, у него выбора не было. После того, как досье подсунули ему, ему оставалось только сдать его в ФБР. Или прямо генпрокурору, какие еще альтернативы? Прятать его, возвращать авторам с пометкой "Не верю", еще что-нибудь? Это было бы моментально использовано против него же, все это прекрасно знали и он сам в первую очередь. С другой стороны, вряд ли он из-за этого хоть на секунду сон потерял - Трампу нагадить он был готов в любой момент с дорогой душой.

Под "подсунули" я не имел в виду "затолкали досье в щель под дверью его спальни". Ему про досье рассказали, он, как он пишет, "согласился получить копию". А уж как именно он ее получил, совершенно неважно. Нет, тут у меня к нему претензий нет.

Другое дело, что его для этого выбрали, зная про его отношение к Трампу.

i looked into it a little bit. does not look like it landed in his lap and he had no choice. looks like he went waaaays to collect it, and knew it was questionable.

i see. but i still hold that he was a stinker to pass it to the FBI. what we do know about the files is - mostly questionable antics with prostitutes.

would that make a potential candidate blackmailable? only if he cared enough about his reputation, and he does not.

Why not?
He's been doing dishonorable shit for decades.
From Keating Five 30 years ago through more recently campaigning specifically on repealing Obamacare and then casting the deciding vote against that very repeal, through dumping on Palin now.
He really hates Trump (and deservedly so), so what's one more dishonorable thing that he had every reason in the world to believe will never come to light.

and yes, beratimg palin now is not nice at all "what if i chose another running mate i would have won" - not nice either. i agree.
